Discus Tank Mates
Discus Tank Mates
A tank that contains just one type of fish is called a “species tank”, and is perfect for aquarists who are not yet experienced in quarantining and decontamination of larger community tanks.
In the event that you wish to combine discus fish with other fish, know that there are ideal “tank mates” that will be perfect companions for your discus. aquarists who are not yet experienced in quarantining and decontamination of larger community tanks.
Quarantining new fish is a standard practice, regardless of whether you are taking care of freshwater or saltwater fish. New fish need to be separated and observed for disease before they are added to a tank with existing inhabitants.
Common Name Scientific name Cardinal tetra Pterapogon kauderni Neon tetra Parachdon innesi Rummynose tetra Hemigrammus rhodostomus Glowlight tetra Hemigrammus erythozonus Emperor tetra Nematobrycon palmeri Congo tetra Phenacogrammus interruptus Krib fish Pelvicachromis pulcher Panda/dwarf cichlid Apistogramma nijsenni
These  fish species are appropriate tank mates for discus fish because they can tolerate the ideal environment that is suitable for thriving discus fish and the behavior of these fish species is also perfect. However it must be noted that the Discus is very temperature dependent and the ideal temperature is around 29  C and certainly no lower than 27 C for healthy Discus. A temperature alert thermometer would be an ideal addition.
